What is Swedish massage?
Swedish massage is the most widely practised form of massage therapy in the UK. It uses a combination of long, gliding strokes (effleurage), kneading (petrissage), rhythmic tapping (tapotement), and circular movements applied to the superficial layers of muscle. The technique was developed in the 19th century and remains the foundation of most Western massage traditions.
Unlike deep tissue massage, which works into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, Swedish massage focuses on relaxation and general circulation. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes and cover the full body, though a therapist can adapt to focus on specific areas if needed.
Who is Swedish massage right for?
Swedish massage is ideal for first-time clients, anyone experiencing general stress or tension, or those looking for a regular wellbeing treatment. It is particularly effective for people who carry tension in the back, neck, and shoulders. If you are unsure which type of massage to book, Swedish is almost always the right starting point.
What to expect from your session
Your therapist will ask about your health history and any areas of concern before the session. You will be asked to undress to your comfort level and will be covered with a sheet throughout, with only the area being worked on uncovered. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes. Most people feel deeply relaxed during and after a Swedish massage.
