What is Indian head massage?
Indian head massage, known in its traditional form as champissage, is a treatment rooted in Ayurvedic medicine that has been practised in India for thousands of years. It focuses on the scalp, neck, shoulders, and upper back: the areas where most people carry stress and tension.
The technique uses a combination of firm massage, acupressure, and gentle stretching. Sessions can be performed seated with the client fully clothed, or adapted to include oil application to the scalp, which requires lying down.
What is it good for?
Indian head massage is particularly effective for tension headaches, migraines, eye strain from screen use, neck and shoulder tightness, and general stress. Because it does not require any undressing or a treatment couch, it is one of the most accessible massage types and can be offered in a wide range of settings.
What to expect
A standard session lasts 30 to 45 minutes. Your therapist will work across the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp, and sometimes the face. If oil is used, this will be discussed beforehand and you will be asked to bring a hair tie or towel. The experience is deeply calming and many clients find themselves drifting off during the session.
